Ronald Edward Harris was born on November 13, 1944 in Hackney, London. Chopper Harris, as he was known, played for 19 years for Chelsea, and is the club's record appearance holder, having played 795 games for the club.

He is also hold the record for the most league appearances for Chelsea, with 657 appearances.

He was widely recognised as one of the hardest players of his generation, and one of the game's toughest tacklers, which earned him his nickname of "Chopper".

Harris was a member of the Chelsea side which won the FA Youth Cup in 1961 and made his senior club debut in February 1962 in a 1-0 win against Sheffield Wednesday. Within a year, he had established himself as a regular in the side, a position he would hold for the next 18 years.

He won the FA Cup with Chelsea in 1970, when they beat Leeds United in a replay, and the following year the European Cup Winners Cup.

On leaving Chelsea in 1980 he went on to play 61 times for Brentford, helping them to their best ever run in the League Cup.
