The inaugural European Cup was held in 1955, and the Champions League was founded in 1992. Clubs from Italy have the most final appearances in European Cup history.

The current holders are Real Madrid, who secured their 13th trophy, and their third in a row, with their 3-1 defeat of Liverpool in 2018.

By the end of the 2018 final, the all-time Champions League top scorer was Cristiano Ronaldo with 120 goals.

Iker Casillas is the record appearance holder, having played 167 times in the competition.

Lionel Messi won the top scorer award four seasons in a row from 2008-09 to 2011-12.

Liverpool have won the trophy more than any other British side, five times. They famously won the trophy in 2005 in Istanbul against a star studded AC Milan team. Led by skipper Steven Gerrard, Liverpool came back from three goals down to win on penalties. Paolo Maldini's goal that came 51 seconds into the match was the fastest ever final goal.

Clarence Seedorf is the only player to have won the European Cup with three different clubs; Ajax, Milan and Madrid.
