Barry McGuigan was born on February 28, 1961, in Clones, Ireland. An exceptional young talent, he won the All Ireland Amateur Championship in 1976 before representing his country at the Commonwealth Games in 1978, and Olympic Games in 1980.

The hotly-tipped boxer suffered an unexpected loss to Peter Eubank in only his third professional fight, but he bounced back to win his next 26 bouts in a row.

On June 8, 1985, in front of a packed 26,000 crowd at Loftus Road, the Irishman produced the fight of his life to defeat unbeaten world champion Eusebio Pedroza on points to win the WBA featherweight crown. Hundreds of thousands of supporters lined the streets of Belfast to celebrate his return.

Enormously popular in the UK and Ireland, Barry McGuigan was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1985.

In his third defence, outside Caesars Palace in the Las Vegas sunshine, the Irishman was beaten on points by Stevie Cruz in one of the most gruelling contests ever seen. It was named the Ring Magazine Fight of the Year for 1986.

McGuigan retired in 1989 with a fight record of 32 wins (28 knockouts) and three losses.

In January 2005, McGuigan was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

The legendary fighter is now a successful boxing manager, and currently looks after super bantamweight prospect Carl Frampton.
