William Shatner was born on 22nd March 1931 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He gained a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1952, but began his acting career while still at college.
Between 1951-1966 Shatner took on a long line of small and supporting roles on stage, TV and film and was highly regarded as a promising and hard-working actor. In 1966 he landed the role of James T. Kirk on Star Trek: The Original Series which ran for three seasons and 79 episodes. Three years later, Shatner also voiced the character on the animated series.
Although the original series gained modest ratings at the time, the show gained cult following making Captain Kirk a cultural icon. This following gave rise to a fandom known as "Trekkies" who would convene at conventions to celebrate the show. Due to this popularity, Paramount revived Star Trek for the motion picture in which Shatner starred, as well as six further Star Trek films.
