Southampton were originally founded at St. Mary's Church, in 1885 by members of the St. Mary's Church of England Young Men's Association. This is where their nickname "The Saints" comes from.

In 1976, Southampton reached the FA Cup Final. They were up against Manchester United at Wembley Stadium. In one of the biggest shocks in the history of the FA Cup, Southampton won 1–0 through an 83rd-minute goal from Bobby Stokes. It was the first time Southampton had won a major trophy.

Southampton is well known for it's successful youth academy. Players who have come through the club's youth system include Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Ward-Prowse and Gareth Bale.

The record home attendance at St Mary's Stadium was 32,363 against Coventry City, 28 April 2012.
