The FIFA World Cup is an international football tournament held every four years.

The current holders are Argentina, who beat France on penalties in 2022.

The World Cup was first held in 1930 after then President Jules Rimet suggested the idea in 1928.

It has been held every four years since then excluding 1942 and 1946 when it wasn't held due to the second world war. Uruguay held and won the first ever World Cup in 1930; only 13 teams competed.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Miroslav Klose overtook Ronaldo of Brazil in scoring the most World Cup goals of all time, with 16. This record was then overtaken by Leo Messi in the 2026 tournament- scoring 19 goals.

There have been eight different winners of the World Cup. Brazil have won the World Cup five times, Italy four, Germany & Argentina three, Uruguay & France twice, Spain and England have won it once.

England won the World Cup in 1966, beating West Germany 4-2 at Wembley, with a hat-trick from Sir Geoff Hurst.

The World Cup is the most widely followed sporting event, surpassing even the Olympics: 715 million people watched the final in 2006.

The biggest World Cup attendance is 200,000 in the Maracana for the 1950 final between Uruguay and Brazil.
