Duncan Cowan Ferguson was born on December 27, 1971 in Stirling, Scotland.

In a 16-year career, he played for Dundee United, Rangers, Everton, Newcastle United and Everton again.

He made 423 club appearances and scored 126 times.

Ferguson represented Scotland on seven occasions. He refused to play for them after 1997, in protest at the way he felt he had been treated by the Scottish FA.

When Walter Smith signed Ferguson for Rangers in July 1993, it was for a then British transfer record fee of £4 million. Dundee United had already turned down £3 million bids from Chelsea, Leeds and Bayern Munich. Ferguson won one trophy with Rangers, the 1993-94 Scottish Premier League.

Smith also signed Ferguson as manager of Everton for £4 million. Ferguson's impact was immediate; on his debut proper he scored one of the goals in a now-famous 2-0 home win over Liverpool that kick-started a three-game winning streak and set the Blues on their way to safety from relegation.

Ferguson won one major trophy with the Toffees, the 1994-95 FA Cup, when Everton beat Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley. He also won the Charity Shield in 1995-96.

In 1997-98, Ferguson was made captain of Everton, by manager Howard Kendall.

Ferguson was a notorious hardman on and off the pitch and his nicknames were "Big Dunc" and "Duncan Disorderly".
