Merson made his debut for Arsenal in the 1986–87 season and went on to play eleven seasons with the North London club.
He played a key role in Arsenal winning the Football League Championship twice, the FA Cup, the Football League Cup, and the European Cup Winners' Cup.
After leaving Arsenal, Merson went on to play for Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Portsmouth and Walsall.
He played a key role in helping Middlesbrough return to the Premier League in 1998 and was subsequently nicknamed "The Magic Man". by the Boro fans.
Originally a forward, Merson found success as an attacking midfielder and playmaker later in his career.
Merson was capped 21 times for England and was selected to play in the 1992 UEFA Euros and the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
