Stephen James "Steve" Coppell was born on July 9, 1955, in Liverpool, England.

As a player, he was a highly regarded right winger known for his speed and work rate. He played 322 times for Manchester United, scoring 53 goals. He won the FA Cup with United in 1976-77 when they beat Liverpool 2-1.

He played 42 times for England, scoring seven goals. He also represented England at the World Cup in 1982.

A knee injury forced him to retire aged 28, after which he went into management. He has a particularly close relationship with Crystal Palace, whom he has managed on four occasions.

Most famously he took Palace to the FA Cup final in 1990, where as underdogs they drew 3-3 in the first match, and lost the replay.
