Since its formation in 1879, Southampton had won six First Division titles in 1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913 and 1936.
The club has won the FA Cup twice (1937 and 1973) and won the the FA Community Shield in 1936.
The clubs most iconic games came when the second tier side beat the mighty Leeds United 1-0 in the 1973 FA Cup final at Wembley. Leeds were the most successful side in England at the time and were only denied the trophy by the heroics of Jim Montgomery in goal. It was a memorable act of giantkilling by the Wearsiders that still ranks amongst the greatest ever FA Cup finals.
Jim Montgomery hold the record for the clubs most appearances, having played 527 first team games for the club between 1961 and 1976.
